The Art Museum of Bokonbaevo is indeed something special. Run by a local artist whose art is inspired by patterns in rocks found close to Lake Issyk-Kul, this is a place where you can learn a lot about local history, customs and art.

Near the center of Bokonbaevo, is the Art Museum run by local artisan, Karypbek. He paints pictures that are inspired by the patterns he finds in rocks along the shore of Issyk-Kul Lake. A selection of his work is available for purchase. Karypbek has become involved in the community too. He works with local schools and has young children paint works of their own, including a picture by his own grandson. These works are often on display in the museum.

Also inside the museum is a section dedicated to archeology and traditional items in the south Issyk-kul region. Earthenware and other pieces are on display, as well as a series of photos showing archeological digs and recent discoveries. Karypbek is very knowledgeable of the history and traditions of the Kyrgyz people and loves to share this information with visitors. A trip to Bokonbaevo would not be complete without a visit to this fascinating place. Entry is free.
